The Josefov Fort construction started in 1780 by the order of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II. The design and initial supervision over the construction was entrusted to a French engineer, Claude Benoit Chevalier de St. Luis de Duhamel Querlonde. The construction was completed in 1787 and the fortress could be put into use. Its main task was to defend the northern border of the Austrian Empire against the Kingdom of Prussia. The fortress had also other uses. It was actually a huge warehouse for weaponry and powder, materials, food, and, at the same time, it ensured safe accommodation for soldiers and the civilians.
