Czocha Castle

This defensive fortress from the 13th century currently houses in its historic interiors a hotel and conference centre. Its picturesque location by Lake Leśnia and mysterious history provide for the very unique atmosphere of Sucha.

It is difficult to find another site that would be so strongly marked with the turbulent history of Silesia. The castle was erected in 1247 on the order of Czech King Wenceslaus I. From 1319, it was ruled for 70 years by the Piast dukes. Afterwards, it returned under the rule of the Czechs and repeatedly changed its owners among the powerful knightly families. In 1909, the deteriorated castle was bought for 1.5 million marks by a Dresden cigar manufacturer Ernst Gütschow, who restored its historical character from 1703 with the help of a Berlin architect Bodo Ebhardt.

Historians assume that during the war the castle housed a secret school of Abwehr code talkers. Later on, it served as a centre for Polish Army officers, owing to which it avoided the fate of other Lower Silesian strongholds and has been preserved in a very good condition to this day. It is now one of the biggest tourist attractions in the region. Tourists eagerly look into its “well of unfaithful wives” – some say you may sometimes hear moans and wails coming from it. Legend has it that a certain Krzysztof Nostitz drowned his wife Gertruda there out of jealousy and due to being cheated on. What one may also find particularly impressive are the two-storey-high Knight’s Hall, the tower and the descent to the underground. It was also there that the scenes from such productions as “The Witcher” or “The Secret of the Cipher Fortress” were shot.
