The Nature and Landscape Protected Area “Wielikąt” is a complex of a dozen or so fish ponds located between the towns of Lubomia, Grabówka, Syrynia and Buków.
The wildlife sanctuary was established in 1993 to protect the wetland birds that live here. The area spreads over 630 hectares. The complex of ponds in a natural environment creates unique living and breeding conditions for the aquatic birds. The area is also an important part of the wildlife corridor and has been classified as one of the most valuable reservoirs of Upper Silesia. In 2008, by the decision of the Minister of Environment, "Wielikąt” (together with the Tworków Forest located on the other side of the Odra River) was incorporated into the special bird protection areas of Natura 2000.
The area is inhabited by 226 species of birds, including many endangered species. Rare plants also grow in the “Wielikąt” area. The dikes and access roads are overshadowed by old trees, often natural monuments in their own right. In 2003 an educational path was created in the nature reserve, with a length of 4 km. It includes seven observation points and a single vantage platform located in the central part of the ponds. A cycling path also runs between the ponds.
